When Prince Gautama Siddhartha failed to get divine knowledge through his strict path after becoming a monk, he later sat in meditation under a pipal tree on a stone platform and attained true knowledge and enlightenment. This stone platform is the Vajrasana meaning 'Diamond Throne'. The Vajrasana, Bodhgaya is positioned between the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree. The site is made of grey sandstone and has animal and bird motifs at the side and carved geometrical patterns on the surface.
This stone platform, where Lord Buddha is restricted for any tourist activity on it; however, even the sight doesn't fail to excite the spirituality of the watcher. The Vajrasana, Bodhgaya is also identified as "the Navel of the Earth" (puthavinabhim) or "the Victory Throne of all Buddhas" (sabba buddhanam jayapallankam). The first Buddhist ruler of India Asoka also referred it to as 'Sambodhi'
